Nohaila Gamah

Director

Nohaila is a director and screenwriter with a background in documentary filmmaking. She studied film, with a keen interest in sociology, at the Liberal Arts and Sciences University College in Amsterdam. Her debut short film, Emotional Girl, was selected for the Debut Competition at the Nederlands Film Festival in 2022 and screened at international film festivals. Currently, her second short film Hshouma, received funding from the NL Film Fonds, and is in pre-production, while she is simultaneously working on her third short film and writing her first theatre play.

Nohaila’s diverse body of work spans short fiction films, non-fiction for television, and commercials, reflecting her versatility as a filmmaker. Her notable contributions include working on Sunny Bergman’s Man Made, the BNN/Vara TV series Teenage Boss, and Abortus is geen Misdaad, which was selected for the prestigious Televizier-Ring Impact Award in 2023. These projects tackle urgent societal issues, a driving force in Nohaila’s storytelling.

Nohaila strives to create films that resonate on a deeper, emotional level, driven by her passion for developing complex characters and pushing the boundaries of storytelling in film. Her work consists of creating films with a strong dramatic arc, incorporating elements from various genres such as comedy, psychological thriller, and body horror. Through her films, she seeks to explore and better understand the complexities of the human psyche.
Additionally, Nohaila is deeply committed to contributing to the female gaze in cinema, telling stories from different female perspectives and amplifying the voices and experiences of women, particularly women of color.
